Extraction-UX data layer: the chunk budget becomes a graph setting; the chat view gets a per-session coverage read
Owner-locked extraction-UX redesign (dispatch 2026-09-24), part 1 (data
layer; the UI chunk follows).
THRESHOLD -> SETTING
- config.ts's EXTRACTION.chunkTokens dies; the default moves into
FACTORY_SETTINGS.graph.extractionChunkTokens (4096, the old constant's
value). GraphSettings gains the optional field, Required at resolution
via the standard ?? FACTORY pattern — pre-redesign records resolve the
default cleanly.
- FLOOR 500 (the implementer's call, documented on the field): every run
pays the graph-carrying prompt overhead out of the write channel's
money — a smaller budget fires penny-batches that cost more per
extracted token than the content is worth. The sanitizer CLAMPS up
(bd68486 clamp-never-reject discipline: fractions floor, junk drops);
the settings PUT REJECTS below-floor with the rationale in the message.
No ceiling: a large budget just delays extraction — the user's stated
cost/thoroughness tradeoff, not a misconfiguration to police.
- The trigger (turn-service.triggerExtraction) takes the budget as a
parameter — chat-handler passes effective.graph.extractionChunkTokens,
the fresh per-turn read, same as every other gate.
- The pipeline's BATCH side threads through the same number:
ExtractionPipelineDeps gains an OPTIONAL getChunkTokens getter with the
factory default (Teacher's 24 test fixtures stay untouched; the two
call-site lines inside extraction.ts are the only cross-band edits,
flagged). chat-handler + backfill/import-notes wire the live
effectiveSettings — trigger and batches share one budget, always.
PER-SESSION COVERAGE READ
- sessionCoverage(chatId) (server/chats.ts): the chat view's ring-meter
block — totalMessages/coveredCount/uncoveredCount/coveredTokens/
uncoveredTokens (the same coverageOf derivation /api/graph/coverage
serves, scoped to one chat), running (chat-kind extraction registered
for this id), and lastFoldedAt (the chat's newest coverage row's fold
— a cheap single pass; null before any fold). GET /api/chats/[id]
carries it as coverage: {...}; unknown chat -> null (the route 404s
first).
- /api/graph/coverage (the all-sessions list) compiles untouched — the
per-session read is a scoping of it, not a supersession; the UI's
sidebar/ring chunk decides which surface it consumes.
Tests: factory/sanitizer pins (clamp-up, fraction-floor, junk-drop),
resolution pins (absent -> 4096, stored 2000 wins), settings-body pins
(valid/absent/fraction/below-floor 400/junk 400), sessionCoverage pins
(derived split, newest-fold scoping, cross-session isolation, running via
the registry, null on unknown chat). 893/893.

Stats-bar catalog join + dock numerator consistency (context-meter close-out)
Platform's context-meter pair (04e336d, 18cc493) left two client seams in my band; this closes the arc: 1. STATS-BAR CATALOG JOIN: contextWindow's denominator resolves ONLY from pi's live catalog — stats-bar now builds the provider:id -> contextWindow index client-side (catalogLimits in model-picker.tsx, the client twin of the server's catalogContextLimits join) over the picker's existing /api/models fetch/cache (useModelCatalog exported; module-level dedupe, one fetch feeds both ModelControl and the meter). Catalog pending or failed -> undefined index -> limit null -> USAGE-ONLY (Platform's interim render IS the null path; the honest-render precedent, never a fake window). 2. DOCK NUMERATOR CONSISTENCY: toBlobs' context fold was still last-step input+output only — now the same cache-inclusive footprint the session meter uses (all four directions; provider "input" EXCLUDES cacheRead/cacheWrite, so the old fold read wildly low on cache-heavy jobs). Same metric everywhere. Review of Platform's interim edits in this band: verified as-shipped — stats-bar's usage-only render (summary + popover), FeedJob.contextLimit with the line-hides null treatment, and the render-test rewrites all fit. Only fix needed: none beyond the above. Tests: catalogLimits pinned pure (index shape, provider:id keying, missing-model absence); toBlobs pinned on the cache-inclusive numerator (10k+0.5k+120k+30k = 160.5k against a 200k feed limit). 889/889. Live-verified on :3001: seedplan's bar reads "18.7k / 1M" (footprint 18725, catalog 1048576); a nope/unknown-model chat renders "12.8k" usage-only with cost "-"; the popover detail matches; the dock blob's context line renders "946 / 1M" from a server-joined feed (an unintentionally real runner-adopted job — the full chain, live). |

Context-meter amendment: CONTEXT_LIMITS dies — pi's live catalog is the only limit source
Owner ruling (2026-09-23, amendment to 04e336d): no hardcoded fallback exists anywhere. contextWindow(record, limits) resolves the denominator ONLY from the live index (provider:id -> contextWindow straight from pi's catalog); a model missing from it (historical session, package update, failed fetch) reads limit null and the meter renders usage-only — the honest-render precedent, never a fake window. - src/core/prices.ts: the 1354-entry CONTEXT_LIMITS table (65KB) and its generation apparatus deleted; the fold returns limit: number | null. PRICES untouched (regen verified byte-identical via the reworked sync-pricing script). - scripts/sync-pricing.ts: generates PRICES only; contextWindow leaves the priced map, the guard, and the template. - The dock meter's owner-selected treatment: the activity feed carries the limit server-side. catalogContextLimits() (server/model-catalog.ts) builds the index over the same keyed providers the picker federates; activityFeed() joins it onto every running job (ActivityJob.contextLimit, null when the model is missing — the dock reads it off the feed, no client-side table, no regression while the UI's catalog-join chunk lands). - components/activity-dock.tsx: toBlobs reads job.contextLimit (import of CONTEXT_LIMITS gone); stats-bar renders usage-only on null limit (mechanical interim — UI stream's join chunk follows). - tests: usage.test.ts pins the no-fallback contract (index hit / absent / empty / missing-model -> null); activity-feed.test.ts pins the server join (catalog model -> 1048576, unknown -> null, no-usage -> null); render pins updated to the interim usage-only render. |

Context-meter fold: cache-inclusive numerator, live-limits denominator, zeroed-step fallback
The owner's context-meter audit (2026-09-23), three fixes in the pure contextWindow() fold (core/prices.ts): - NUMERATOR: cache tokens count. Provider "input" excludes cacheRead/cacheWrite, so input+output read wildly low on cache-heavy sessions (40k shown vs ~190k real). The fold is now pi's own totalTokens semantics: input + output + cacheRead + cacheWrite. The fields were already persisted in every CallUsage (chat-handler's capture seam); non-caching providers are unchanged. - DENOMINATOR: the live catalog wins. contextWindow() accepts an optional live-limits index (provider:id -> contextWindow — the shape the client already holds from GET /api/models, where toModelDto projects pi's Model.contextWindow); CONTEXT_LIMITS, the generated duplicate, is demoted to fallback for models the live catalog doesn't carry. The UI's stats-bar join passes its catalog index; the call is unchanged when omitted. - RIDE-ALONG (honesty guard): a zeroed/aborted last step falls back to the previous step's footprint — an abort artifact is not a reading. All-zero runs return null (no meter, never a bogus tiny number). Tests pin all three: the cache-inclusive fold (and the plain no-cache fold unchanged), live-index-beats-table + table fallback + unknown-to- both null, and the zeroed-step fallback (previous step wins; all-zero is null). 885/885 tests, typecheck/lint/build green. |

Default bold ink #c96b4a -> #ee928c
Owner default change (2026-09-23): the factory strong-color token moves to the softer coral. The factory lives in the stylesheet token (both theme blocks in globals.css) - settings' boldColor:null means "factory" by design, so no record/schema change. The settings row hint + placeholder follow, plus the placeholder test and two comments that cited the old literal. Live-verified: unset boldColor renders rgb(238,146,140) (#ee928c) on the real <strong>; dialog hint reads "Empty = #ee928c". |

Bold renders the real element: the Bold color setting applies
The owner's repro: the appearance Bold color never applied anywhere. Root cause: streamdown's default `strong` component renders bold as <span class="font-semibold" data-streamdown="strong"> - NOT a <strong> element - while the app's ink plumbing (.lh-prose :where(strong, b) in globals.css, zero specificity by design) matches strong/b ELEMENTS. So bold text never took --lh-ink-strong: not the factory #c96b4a, not any settings boldColor (it rendered plain foreground at weight 600). Italic always worked because streamdown leaves `em` native - hence the asymmetry the owner noticed. Fix: a `strong` override in mdComponents (the stable module-level set, so Streamdown's memoized tree keeps identity) renders the semantic element: <strong data-streamdown="strong">. Screen readers announce emphasis again, the designed token rule applies unmodified, and the weight reads 700 (the .lh-prose rule) instead of the span's 600. Both Streamdown surfaces (MessageResponse, reasoning) pass mdComponents, so every markdown surface is covered. Verified live: bold in seedplan now renders #c96b4a at weight 700 in a real <strong>; after PUTting boldColor #7dd3fc the live strong flips to rgb(125,211,252) with no reload; italic unchanged (#6fa9d6 native em). Scratch record restored to unset. |

writePositionMap: tmp + rename — the same crash-safety rewriteLedgers uses
Flag routed from the UI stream's rename-shuffle fix (a9339b3): the
positions ledger was the one remaining plain writeFileSync among the
rewritable ledgers — a torn write (crash mid-write) could replace it
with a half-written file, and readPositionMap parses a failure to {}
(honest empty, but the resting layout would be silently lost). The
tmp+rename pattern from rewriteLedgers, ~4 lines up the file: write a
uniquely-named temp, rename over the ledger — a crash leaves either the
old ledger intact or the new one complete, plus an orphan .tmp-*.
879/879 tests, typecheck/lint/build green; live-verified via the node
deletion's positions prune (no temp residue, valid JSON).

Rename-shuffle fix: label-only channel + three hygiene items
The live-rename interlude routed label changes through a fresh snapshot object, which flowed setData -> geometry rebuild - and the rebuild treats the last-fetched position ledger as authoritative and cancels any pending drag commit, so a rename visibly rewound the whole graph whenever display had drifted (recent drag, mid-anneal, physics re-anneal). - Renderer gains setClusterLabels (a setPhysicsTuning sibling): pure applyClusterLabels patches the data-side cluster records and the built region meta (re-wrapping the changed entries with the same measure the build uses), markDirty only. Never touches nodes, the sim, positions, or the pending commit. The hull-silence guard travels inside it: a null-label cluster is a gone record - no rename can reach it. - The lh:chat-renamed listener stops building snapshot objects: renameSessionsPatch writes the sessions entry in place (pure display state - the detail card's provenance line), the cluster label goes through the new channel, and a tick bump re-renders the view. Identity preserved everywhere -> the [snapshot]-keyed setData feed cannot fire. - Hygiene (a): a fresh sim starts at alpha 1 and never decays while stopped - the first post-rebuild drag re-annealed the whole graph at full strength. buildSim now initializes alpha at the settle floor, so first-drag matches steady-state drag. setPhysicsTuning still rehearses alpha(1) when a full re-anneal is the point. - Hygiene (b): nodes missing from the position ledger used to dump at (0,0) via the ?? 0 fallback. seedMissingNodePositions seeds them on a deterministic ring around the known positions' centroid (FNV-1a hashed angle, golden-angle spiral offset). - Hygiene (c) is store-band (writePositionMap's writeFileSync -> tmp+rename): flagged for Platform, not crossed. Tests: applyClusterLabels suite (patch + re-wrap, hull silence, no-op, explicit null, unknown ids), renameSessionsPatch identity pins (sessions map and clusters array identity preserved - the contract that keeps setData from firing), seedMissingNodePositions determinism + ring math. Live-verified: mid-anneal rename shows a 4-world-unit max disc jump (no teleport), the commit PUT survives the rename, rest renames leave the disc build byte-identical, and a held first drag displaces discs ~14 units instead of re-forming the graph. |

Polish round: node-delete chrome + rename alignment
Owner polish dispatch (2026-09-23): - Right-click no longer pins a node or opens the detail card: the canvas pointerdown/up handlers now gate on the primary button, so the context menu arrives alone. - Node context menu: label is just "Delete" and the shell hugs its content (w-44 -> w-fit); the menu body keeps focus for arrow cycling but never shows the browser's default focus ring (outline-none on the MenuShell body - applies to every menu). - Delete confirm: "Delete node?" title in CMU Serif, red (text-destructive); the node name sits below in JetBrains Mono inline-code; the Delete button carries the destructive treatment (border + tint, fill deepens on hover). Rest of the dialog stays neutral. - Sidebar rename row: text and metadata stay at the idle row's x - the status spacer and the input's border/padding are gone; the underline is the only editing cue. |

Node deletion affordance (node interlude): right-click menu + full-death confirm
Platform's 50bfcba engine, surfaced. Three pieces: 1. THE RIGHT-CLICK (graph-canvas.ts): a contextmenu listener — always preventDefault (the native menu on a full-bleed custom canvas is never useful) — picks the node under the pointer and hands the canvas-relative position to a new onContext callback (null on empty stage). pickAt already respected the visibility filters: a hidden node cannot be right-clicked, same as it cannot be clicked. The view opens a MenuShell anchored at a zero-size point-div positioned at the pointer — MenuShell's placement machine measures it like any element, so the menu gets the full discipline: placement, focus on open, arrow cycling, honest-fit flip. Delete… is its one action; the dismissal contract is the sidebar's (wave 6): outside-click / Esc (claimed) close, and a camera move closes it too — a menu floating over a moved graph is anchored to nothing. 2. THE CONFIRM (delete-node-dialog.tsx, portaled z-50 like the session-delete dialog whose tone it follows): the pre-flight impact read (GET /api/graph/nodes/[id]) renders the plain facts — link count, quiz-answer count, session-note count (zeros stay visible — hiding a zero fact would understate the blast), and the referencing sessions with display names joined CLIENT-SIDE from the snapshot (chat titles; imported-notes file paths; unknown ids honestly themselves). "This cannot be undone" says the permanence. The 409 extraction_running renders the dock phrasing (EXTRACTION_RETRY_LINE — the server names the extraction, the ACTIVITY DOCK is the surface the user actually watches drain) with a Try-again; every other failure shows the server's line verbatim. The honest 404 (deleted elsewhere meanwhile) states it plainly and its Close rides the same refresh. The pure body is exported separately (the settings-dialog pattern) — SSR pins everything the live dialog shows. 3. SUCCESS: onDeleted dispatches lh:graph-revision with the returned graphRevision — the wave-6 chain refetches snapshot + costs. The detail card closes if it pointed at the dying node (the refetch would close it anyway; the same frame should not show a card for a node the user just killed). Clusters shrink / unrender below the minimum on the server's read — the client just renders the refreshed snapshot. Tests: 867/867 (+8 — the join helper, honest plurals, the 409 phrasing pin, the dialog body at loading/gone/impact/failure states). Live-verified on :3001 against the real engine, scratch data: impact facts match the API, the intercepted 409 shows the dock line and Try-again recovers into a real delete, the three-member cluster died below MIN_CLUSTER_SIZE server-side, the labeled seedplan cluster + its canvas label died with it (cold load draws nothing stale; the in-session refresh refetches and the dying node's label stops drawing), other nodes survived, and the full menu contract holds (empty stage → no menu; Esc, outside-click, camera move all close). |

Single-node deletion: full death by node id (node interlude, owner-locked)
The remedy for undeletable nodes (preserve-graph orphans from session deletion; notes-import nodes with no chat behind them): DELETE /api/graph/nodes/[id], full-death semantics — the user pointing at the node IS the intent; references from other sessions do NOT preserve it. - core/graph-deletion.ts deleteNodeTraces: the node's every line, every edge touching it, every quiz/observation event naming it, its mapping lines, and its resting position — one synchronous atomic rewriteLedgers call; only the ledgers that changed rewrite (mtimes stay honest). Blast radius is exactly the rows naming the node id; notes source records stay (deleting a proposition is not deleting the file). Derived data self-heals on read: the birth cluster shrinks below MIN_CLUSTER_SIZE and stops rendering. - nodeDeletionImpact (GET /api/graph/nodes/[id]): the confirm dialog's pre-flight facts — edge count, quiz/observation history, referencing sessions. The snapshot's edges + nodeSessions cover part of this, but the raw event history was nowhere on the client — hence the read. - Guards (server/graph.ts deleteGraphNode), decided + documented: NO turn/jobs gates (they never write graph ledgers; the orchestration is synchronous end to end, nothing interleaves). THE EXTRACTION GATE: 409 while ANY pipeline run is registered — a mid-flight run holds pre-deletion findings and could re-reference the dying node. The run is never aborted (its spend belongs to another session — outside this deletion's blast radius; the UI retries once the dock drains. A run started after the deletion is legitimate re-learning: fresh ledgers, fresh node id, and mergeFindings' existingIds guard ignores linkTo ids that no longer exist — no dangling edges, no resurrection. Live-verified on dev data: impact read, full-death stats, honest 404 on repeat, and the file cluster fell 3→2 and unrendered itself. 859/859 tests, typecheck/lint/build green. EOF ) |

Wave 7 interlude: prober tool-call chrome + live rename cluster labels
Graph tool-call visibility — the prober's list_sessions /
list_propositions rendered like nothing happened in the transcript
(the registry default is silence for unregistered tools). They now join
the EXACT read/ls/find/grep discipline: artifactRenderers maps both to
the ToolCallCard — collapsed one-liner, expandable Input/Output card.
The results ride the card's string path verbatim (the tools' own
compact name/level/date line format), exactly how read results render.
- list_propositions gets a headline arg: the session id is the call's
subject — the collapsed line reads "list_propositions chat_…".
Shown as given, never resolved (the same no-resolution rule as
read's path). list_sessions carries no arg (empty input — the
ls-with-no-path discipline).
- No bespoke row-layout card: the outputs are pre-formatted strings
(the model-facing format IS the learner-facing format here), and
the dispatch's "SAME look" directive settles the shape question.
Live rename labels — renaming a session anywhere (sidebar inline row,
chat header) already announces lh:chat-renamed {id, title}; the graph
view now listens. The birth-session partition means the title IS the
cluster label, so the patch is targeted and in-place, no refetch: the
snapshot's sessions map (the detail card's provenance line) and the
one matching cluster. The new snapshot object flows the existing
setData → geoVersion → rebuild chain, so the wrapped label (wave 7's
wrapRegionLabel) re-wraps for the new text. Unlabeled clusters keep
their hull-only silence — a null label is a GONE record, the guard
holds the line.
Tests: registry pins for both tools + the prober-card render (collapsed
headline, verbatim rows, no-arg discipline). 855/855; live-verified on
:3001 with fillText instrumentation: both cards render collapsed and
expandable in the transcript, and a sidebar rename flipped the canvas
cluster label old→new with the old label's draws stopping cold.

Wave 7 close-out: the graphTools surface, wrapped cluster labels, the orphan sweep
Part 1 — the surface:
- Settings ▸ Agent ▸ Tools gains the prober GRAPH-TOOLS row as its FIRST
row (owner ruling: in the Tools section, not the tool-toggles list —
its subject is the map, its mechanism is agent capability). Writes
agent.graphTools {enabled} (absent = on, the toggle discipline) via
the section PUT; composeGraphTools pure seam. Its own key in the agent
contract — never in the tools map.
- The row carries the search-row hint discipline: "Connects prior
sessions' knowledge into new ones — the prober reads the knowledge
map" (owner wording). The honest interplay composes both: when
graph.enabled is off the row dims + disables with a "Graph is
disabled" hint (the effective gate itself is server-side, per-turn
fresh). AgentSection reads the graph section (record.graph, passed by
the dialog) — read-only.
- Cluster labels wrap: wave 7 made labels session names and FILE PATHS,
which the old single-line fillText could not bound. wrapRegionLabel
(pure, exported): word-wrap first, char-split long paths (the
node-label discipline), capped at 3 lines, overflow folded into an
ellipsized last line (owner: wrap, cap 2–3, ellipsize). Pre-wrapped
once per geometry build at the SCREEN-fixed size (viewer-relative
labels — the wrap never goes stale mid-camera-move), drawn centered
line-by-line at the centroid. Deleted-session clusters keep their
hull-only honest silence (label null → no lines).
- The orphan sweep: StatsBar's leftSlot prop is dead (its one consumer,
the knowledge-context slider, died in c690181) — removed, and pre-chat
views now render NOTHING on the left (owner ruling this round: a
"— · —" summary over an empty popover is pure noise) — the dictation
middle just widens. Stale knowledge-context comments swept in
chat.tsx (adoption-window + activity-nudge docs), activity-dock.tsx
(useActivity ground rules), dictation.tsx (×2 adaptive-meter docs),
home.tsx (pre-chat dock comment).
Part 2 — Teacher's c690181 review: clean. Imports, KIND_ICON/KIND_LABEL
entries, render branches and event seams all excised whole; the probe-
handoff branch re-indented intact and merge-adopted; tests updated in
lockstep (merge-adopted, record-adapter, render-new-session retired).
Platform's 4b60e0f roster-string fixes (labeler dropped from both
SLOT_META blocks) reviewed — consistent across agent-section +
setup-dialog.
Gates: tsc clean, 854/854 (8 new: wrapRegionLabel cases, graphTools
SSR rows ×3; stats-bar + ladder fixtures updated to the new rulings),
lint 0, build ok. Live on :3001: graphTools row first-in-group with
hint, off→{enabled:false}→on round-trip, graph-off dimming + hint +
disabled toggle, pre-chat rows summary-free, chat view keeps its
summary, long-title cluster label wrapped without console errors
(visual read unavailable this session — pure wrap is unit-pinned).

Wave 7 close-out: the embedding ledger seam dies; notes birth via mapping lines
Part 1 — the ledger + remnants interlude (master-dispatched, owner ruling 2026-09-23: nothing configures the graph beyond chat models): - The embedding ledger surface is gone: readEmbeddings/writeEmbeddings ports, the EmbeddingsLedger contract, EMBEDDINGS_FILE (config, store impls, graphRevision source list), and graph-deletion's vector-pruning step. On-disk data files stay untouched (inert history). - The extraction embedder seam dies wholesale: ExtractionPipelineDeps drops the embedder dep (chat-handler + backfill/import-notes stubs go with it), the 'embedding' phase leaves ExtractionPhase, the usage capture/persist helpers die, and stages.embedding leaves ExtractionRunUsage (historical records keep their shape — reads are lenient). Extraction is two stages again, like the local-embedder era. - Consumer-less remnants: latestQuizOutcomes + QUIZ_EVENT_KINDS, clusterContentId, matchClusterLabelings + Community + ClusterLabeling, the readClusterLabels/appendClusterLabel port seams + store impls + LEDGER_FILES.clusterLabels. NamingRunUsage/readNamingRuns STAY (standing ruling — the cost pill renders historical naming spend); clusterHue + MIN_CLUSTER_SIZE stay (live). - The 'labeler' role dies: BACKGROUND_MODEL_ROLES, ROLE_SLOT, ModelRole, the catalog pin projections, and the UI roster strings. RolePins keys shrink with the union. The notes birth fallback (owner-approved 2026-09-23, surfaced by the interlude's live smoke: production notes imports create provenance-EMPTY nodes (importNotes passes messages: null — the file's anchor is the mapping line), so the provenance-only birth rule left every imported file unclustered and invisible to the prober's session list, against the locked file-birth ruling. A provenance-empty node now births under its FIRST mapping line's chatId (ledger order); only notes-born nodes ever hit the fallback (chat nodes always carry provenance; a re-encountered node's link-append re-opens the provenance rule). Deletion-safe: mapping lines of deleted chats are stripped alongside their provenance. Live-verified on port 3004: a fresh notes import clusters under its src_ id with the file path as the label, end to end with no embedder. 845/845 tests, typecheck/lint/build green. EOF ) |

wave 7: the prober reads its map — graph-context injection dies whole
The owner's zero-configuration ruling (2026-09-23): nothing configures the graph beyond chat models. The prior-knowledge injection — its budget dial, its runner, its marker part, its dock/dispatch entries — is removed across all bands; the prober now reads the learner's persistent knowledge map on demand through two gated tools instead: - list_sessions: every birth session, names + kinds + counts + dates (graphSessionIndex, Platform's core seam) - list_propositions(session): what was born there + the session's own latest understanding level + that evaluation's date (graphSessionPropositions) — names/levels/dating ONLY, no statement text (owner ruling: the map's organization is the prober's business, its prose is not) Registered via createProberTools when chat-handler passes graphStore (the graphToolsEnabled gate decided server-side, per-turn fresh); the prober doctrine gains the map-review nudge at session start. Also: runner's JobKind special-casing collapses (KIND_ROLE/KIND_RUNNERS are plain records again), semantic-clusters.ts dies with its test, the embedder dep's doc tells the wave-7 stub story, and ports.ts's readClusterLabels/readNamingRuns surface stays untouched for Platform's ledger-port interlude. 848/848 tests, typecheck/lint/build green. |

Wave 7 chunk B: remove the embeddings machinery — the ladder collapses
The owner's wave-7 ruling: embeddings die entirely (git history is the
stash); clustering is birth-session derived (chunk A, 950ddfd), labels
are session names, and the prober's graph tools replace injection.
- settings: GraphSettings collapses to { enabled } — embedding,
embeddingModel, clustering, labeling all die. Migration story: stale
record keys are UNREAD and dropped by the sanitizer's reconstruction;
the next graph-section PUT (replace-whole) persists the collapsed
shape. The settings-panel GraphSection renders one master row.
- deleted: src/server/embeddings.ts (adapters, resolveEmbeddingPortFor,
embedNewNodes, embeddingPort, embeddingModelCatalog), the
GET /api/models/embeddings route, scripts/embed-graph.ts, tests for
all three, and the /api/models/embeddings picker surfaces in the UI.
- prices: EMBEDDING_PRICES overlay + callCost fallback die. cost-summary:
the embedding stage fold dies — back to three stages (extraction/
audit/naming) per the owner ruling; historical stages.embedding spend
in old run records is simply not displayed.
- ports: EmbeddingPort/EmbeddingResult/EmbeddingTask die. The embeddings
LEDGER surface (readEmbeddings/writeEmbeddings + EmbeddingsLedger +
EMBEDDINGS_FILE + graph-deletion's vector pruning) STAYS — inert data,
kept only so graph-context.ts compiles until Teacher's pass removes
it; the seam dies in the follow-up interlude.
- chat-handler (approved cross-lane unwiring, wave-6 precedent): the
extraction pipeline's embedder becomes a documented no-op (nothing
embedded, nothing spent, ledger untouched) until Teacher's pass
removes the phase; the graph-context injection dispatch gate, the
graphContext deps wiring, the setContextRespawn seam, and
turn-service's triggerGraphContext are gone — injection is dead
code pending Teacher's file deletions.
- scripts: backfill-graph/import-notes pass the same no-op embedder;
replay-layout derives clusters from birthSessionPartition (the same
partition the real settle uses) instead of the embeddings ledger.
- settings-body: parseGraphSettingsBody reads the master switch only —
old-shape keys in a body are ignored, not rejected; bad shapes 400.
- next.config: the @huggingface tracing-exclusion guards die with the
last reference.
Cross-lane flags: extraction.ts/graph-context.ts keep stale embed
comments + the embed phase until Teacher's full pass (their parallel
interlude owns those files — zero overlap kept by design);
semantic-clusters.ts + its test stay one more round (extraction.test.ts,
Teacher's file, still imports it — they delete it with the namer cases);
ChatSettings.graphContextTokens + the graph-context-control UI stay
until Teacher+UI.
Gates: tsc clean, eslint clean, 885/885 tests, build compiles.
Live-verified on the port-3004 dev tree: PUT /api/settings/graph with
dead keys collapses on write, bad shapes 400, GET reads {enabled: true},
/api/models/embeddings 404s.

feat(extraction): kill the dead LLM cluster-namer — session names own the labels now
Wave 7 chunk A (950ddfd) replaced semantic clustering with birth-session clusters labeled by session names — the LLM namer became dead code, but extraction still called it, minting naming runs nobody reads on every merge. Real model spend wasted per extraction. Removed (agent band): - src/agent/subagents/cluster-namer.ts — the naming sub-agent, deleted whole (refreshClusterLabels, clusterNamingSettled, the naming loop). - extraction.ts: both post-merge garnish blocks (chat + notes paths), the labeler test seam on ExtractionModels, and the import. The labeler role's only consumer is gone; the 'labeler' entry in BACKGROUND_MODEL_ROLES/ROLE_SLOT (core band) is now consumer-less — flagged to Platform, not crossed. - scripts/import-notes.ts: the settle-before-exit line + the named- clusters count in the summary. - tests: the cluster-naming describe (naming + failure-non-fatal tests) and the dead CLUSTER_* fixtures; the labeler-less BYOK test repurposed as the kill pin — a merge mints NO naming runs and NO label records. NOT touched (flagged, outside the agent band): matchClusterLabelings (core/clusters.ts), clusterContentId (core/graph.ts — now consumer- less), the appendClusterLabel/readClusterLabels port seams + store impls + ClusterLabeling type (store/core band), tests/clusters.test.ts's matchClusterLabelings describe. Cost-summary's naming stage untouched per Platform's ruling (historical spend display reads readNamingRuns, which stays live). Gates: typecheck, 921/921, lint, build. |

Birth-session clustering + the prober graph-tools data seam (wave 7 chunk A)
Embeddings are dying (chunk B removes the machinery); the clusters they
used to carry become the session that created them — derived on read.
- New src/core/session-clusters.ts: birthSessionPartition groups merged
nodes by their FIRST SURVIVING provenance point's chatId (owner-locked
2026-09-23). Deletion is self-healing by construction: stripped-birth
survivors re-attribute to their earliest remaining contributor, and
empty-provenance nodes stay unclustered. Notes imports are birth-sessions
too (owner ruling) — their label is the file path.
- graphSnapshot: clusters = the birth partition filtered >= MIN_CLUSTER_SIZE
(the hull presentation rule), id = session id, label = session name (chat
title / file path; a deleted record renders unlabeled). The persisted
cluster-labelings join dies; no LLM naming pass needed anymore.
- settleGraphLayout derives the same partition from readNodes — drops its
readEmbeddings dep. One cluster concept everywhere.
- Prober data seam (core/graph.ts, pure ports-driven like the snapshot):
graphSessionIndex (every birth session: id, name, chat|file kind,
createdAt/updatedAt, birth-proposition count, recency-ordered) and
graphSessionPropositions (a session's birth propositions with the
extractor's latest understanding level and THAT event's own timestamp —
owner ruling: quiz outcomes are ledger evidence, they never move the
evaluation date). Teacher's tool handlers consume these in-process.
- New agent.graphTools subsection { enabled?: boolean } (owner ruling:
the toggle gates prober tool REGISTRATION — agent capability, agent
section, its own subsection, NOT the tool-toggles map; absent = ON).
Lenient sanitizer, strict settings-body parser, passthrough resolution,
and graphToolsEnabled(effective) = graph.enabled && toggle for Teacher's
registry wiring.
Gates: tsc clean, eslint clean, 923/923 tests, next build compiles.
Live-verified on the worktree dev data: 10 nodes → 2 clusters labeled
with their chat titles; session index + propositions carry levels and
their own timestamps.

Wave 6 chunk B: the embeddings surfaces — picker, re-embed gate, gray-outs, cost pill
- Settings ▸ Graph grows the embedding-model picker (graph-row-embedding-model):
GET /api/models/embeddings' live-federated BYOK catalog (re-fetched on mount
and every settings save), rows priced from EMBEDDING_PRICES ("$x.xx/1M in",
honestly "—" when unlisted), ids shown AND stored as full colon-safe slugs
(openrouter:liquid/…:free is never split), plus an Unset row writing null.
Empty catalog = nothing keyed: the trigger BECOMES the deep link to Keys
("Add a provider key first…") — and deep-links fired while the dialog is
open now actually switch sections (initialSection was read once at mount;
the body follows it now — pre-existing gap, first exercised by this link).
- Re-embed gate (owner design): picking a model that differs from the stored
one holds the write behind a confirm strip carrying the honest node count
from GET /api/graph; zero propositions skip the strip (nothing to re-embed)
and land directly. Unset never confirms — the port just stops resolving.
The copy says the re-embed runs with the next background pass (the staleness
machinery — a settings PUT alone never triggers it; no server endpoints
were added).
- Gray-out, the searchStatus precedent: with no model configured, the ladder
rungs Embedding/Clustering/Labeling dim + disable with a "Needs an
embedding model" hint (master switch stays lit), and the stats-bar
GraphContextControl swaps its slider for a dimmed deep-link button to the
Graph section. Loading never grays; every settings save re-reads (signal).
- Cost chrome: the pipeline popover grows the Embeddings stage row
(costs.stages.embedding, wave 6's folded stage — "— · 0 in / 0 out" until
runs exist, same as its siblings).
- Master's ride-along: the core-barrel ChatDeleteMode comment now says two
type-only things (it always exported both).
Gates: tsc clean, 912/912 (8 new: price lines, model-dependency predicate,
unset/set SSR dimming; 2 ladder fixtures updated to the new no-model
semantics), lint 0, build ok. Live-verified on :3001: unset deep-link →
graph section, menu pricing + colon-safety (37 options), confirm strip with
"20 propositions", Cancel keeps the record, Unset writes immediately,
in-dialog empty-catalog deep-link lands Keys, Embeddings row in the popover.

Wave 6 chunk A: sidebar context menu (Rename/Delete) + the two-option delete dialog
- Right-click any session row: MenuShell context menu, exactly two actions (owner ruling): Rename and Delete… — MenuShell discipline (placement, focus, arrow cycling, lh:menu-open announcements), agent-section's outside-click/Esc contract with [data-lh-menu] carve-outs. - Rename is INLINE in the row (owner ruling): select-all entry, Enter/blur commits through the existing plumbing — PUT /api/chats/:id then lh:chat-renamed. The open chat header now LISTENS for the event too, so renaming the active session from the sidebar updates the header in place (it only dispatched before). - Delete opens the two-option dialog (locked design, DELETE_OPTIONS pure seam for render pins): "Delete the session only" (preserve-graph — the graph keeps every contribution) vs "Also remove its graph traces" (delete-nodes — shared topics survive, only-this-session topics die). 409 turn_in_flight/jobs_running and 503 extraction_winding_down render the server's line verbatim with a same-mode Try-again. - Success: the sidebar patches its snapshot instantly, the active session navigates home (chat unmounts — drafts die with it), and lh:graph-revision announces the returned revision — the graph view refetches the snapshot AND costs (deletion is the one writer the status poll can't see). - ChatDeleteMode type re-exported through the core barrel (the shell's one needed seam from core/graph-deletion.ts). Gates: tsc clean, 909/909, lint 0, build ok. Live-verified on :3001: context menu open/Esc, inline rename (row + API + active header), both delete modes on scratch sessions, simulated 409 + retry-then-succeed, active-session navigation home, graph+costs refetch deltas on home. |

docs(extraction): catch the capture comments up to usage-on-error (02bd1b0)
Platform's partial-spend interlude made embedNewNodes fail BY RESULT: landed vectors + partial usage ride the return value instead of a throw. The extraction-side doc comments still claimed 'failed embeds contribute nothing' — now they state the pay-once truth: skipped (unconfigured) embeds carry no usage, failed ones carry the landed batches' steps, and a mid-run failure leaves a three-stage run's partial embedding spend on the ledger. The call-site comment says clustering runs with what LANDED (not 'without the new nodes'), and recordEmbedFailure's doc marks the catch belt-and-suspenders for injected embedders that still throw (production no longer does). |

embedNewNodes: usage-on-error + pay-once (partial-failure accounting)
Teacher's Wave-6 review flagged a money-ledger hole: a mid-batch embed throw discarded the spend of batches that had already landed (extraction only sees success results). Owner ruling 2026-09-23 (option A, pay-once): the landed vectors persist too — a retry embeds only what remains, so each text is billed exactly once. - embedNewNodes never throws on embed failures: per-batch try/catch, result gains `failed` (error message), `embedded` counts what actually landed, and usage carries the completed batches' steps either way (usage-on-error). - Zero-landed failures write nothing — the old ledger (its own model/dim) survives untouched. Stale-wipe semantics unchanged. - scripts/embed-graph.ts: honest failure output (lands count, not the in-memory total), exit 1 on failure. - tests: 4 new cases — mid-run failure (32 land, 8 remain; retry resumes and re-bills only the rest), first-batch failure (no write, no spend, old vectors survive), success carries no failed key. Live-verified on port 3004: bogus-model 400 from OpenRouter → exit 1, ledger untouched; healthy re-run embeds 0 (no re-spend); reset scratch setting to null. Gates: typecheck, lint, 899/899 tests, build. |

fix(graph-context): honest wording for the unconfigured-embedder failure
Wave-6 review (Teacher stream): the injection runner's null-embedder branch failed with 'graph.embeddingModel is null', but the resolver collapses BOTH an unset model AND a set model whose provider key vanished into null — a key race mid-session would have reported a false 'null' setting. The message now names both causes honestly. Pinned by a new failure-mode test (null resolver → honest error, never a phantom query). Review verdicts (no changes needed): the session-deletion guard sits at every chat-merge boundary (per batch, fresh lookup, rides the existing AbortError path — nothing merged, nothing checkpointed, registry cleaned in the finally); persistRunUsage's deleted-chat skip composes with appendSourceUsage's vanished-source no-op so no usage record dangles; notes sources have no deletion surface so the notes path needs no guard. The embedding tail's non-fatal contract holds (failure → recordEmbedFailure → no stage, extractor/auditor usage still persists through the catch). |

BYOK provider embeddings (wave 6 chunk B): kill local transformers
Replace the @huggingface/transformers local embedder (~316MB ONNX cache) with an EmbeddingPort seam: graph.embeddingModel (nullable "provider:id" slug) selects an OpenRouter/OpenAI/Gemini adapter, resolved fresh per call from settings + the auth store so key rotations land immediately. - src/server/embeddings.ts rewritten: slug grammar, injected-fetch adapters (OpenRouter input_type, Gemini taskType batching, OpenAI index-ordered rows), honest resolution (null = skip-with-info, set model with missing key = honest error), embedNewNodes with model-change re-embed wipe + ghost pruning + usage steps, federated catalog (OpenRouter /api/v1/embeddings/models — VERIFIED live, the inverse path 404s; OpenAI text-embedding- filter; Gemini embedContent filter). - GET /api/models/embeddings: federated catalog, empty when no keys. - Extraction tail records stages.embedding usage into the run's money channel; EMBEDDING_PRICES overlay in core/prices.ts (outside the sync-generated block), callCost falls back to it; cost-summary folds the fourth stage; graph-context injection resolves its embedder per run, fails honestly when unconfigured, records query tokens. - Settings: GraphSettings.embeddingModel (null factory), section parser validates slug shape (id may contain colons — OpenRouter :free suffixes, live catalog fact). - Removal: @huggingface/transformers uninstalled, PATHS.modelCache and onnx tracing entries deleted, @huggingface tracing-excludes guard added, stale sharp/libvips comments updated to historical. Live-verified on port 3004: catalog federates 36 rows (33 OpenRouter + 3 OpenAI), embedNewNodes embedded 10 nodes via the free liquid/lfm-2.5 model (dim 1024, 435 prompt tokens, 1 call, $0), settings PUT rejects bad slugs with 400. feat(graph): two-mode session deletion — the first destructive ledger operation
DELETE /api/chats/[id]?mode=preserve-graph|delete-nodes (mode required): - preserve-graph: only extraction bookkeeping dies (coverage rows, legacy checkpoints) — graph ledgers byte-untouched - delete-nodes: the chat's ledger traces die. Node survival = surviving provenance point / mapping line (notes imports carry empty provenance) / surviving event. The creator's aliases + provenance are stripped from a surviving node's create line (owner ruling 2026-09-23: name/statement/createdAt are the shared identity); orphan nodes, their edges, events, mappings, positions, embedding vectors and cluster members die; cluster labels stay (immutable) Gates: 404 unknown, 409 turn_in_flight / jobs_running (with jobIds), 503 extraction_winding_down after a 10s abort-and-poll; the purge is one sync block (ledgers → jobs → chat record last). rewriteLedgers is atomic (tmp + rename). graphRevision (max mtime over graph data files) rides the activity feed + the response as the change stamp. Anti-resurrection: the chat pipeline re-checks chat liveness at each merge — a run that slips past the wind-down aborts with nothing merged or checkpointed; its partial spend dies with the chat. |

Polish: session names take 900 weight serif-off; floating controls match graph chrome
- .font-title now requests font-weight: 900 — with the serif toggle OFF, the prose font is a VARIABLE font and was rendering titles at 400, a whisper next to CMU's bold-only face; 900 lands directly on Source Sans 3 and CMU's single 700 face snaps to nearest, unchanged. Same rendering with serif on, real weight with it off. - The model + thinking pills match the graph view's floating top-right chrome (import notes / gear / coverage): border bg-card/85 shadow-lg backdrop-blur — the graph no longer bleeds through the pills. - The dictate button gets the same blurring at lower opacity (bg-card/50 backdrop-blur), staying quieter than the model pills. Gates: tsc clean, 866/866, lint 0, build ok. Live-verified: pills/dictate computed styles byte-identical to the reference chrome (bg .85/.5 alpha + blur(8px) + same shadow stack); title requests 900 in both serif states. |

Fix wave round 2: serif toggle actually toggles; empty number settings stay empty
- The session-name-serif toggle looked dead because --font-title was an
@theme INLINE token: the .font-title utility carried a baked copy of the
family, so the runtime var the toggle wrote was never read by any
consumer. Moved --font-title to a plain @theme block — the utility now
reads var(--font-title) and the :root factory default emits — the toggle
flips the session name's computed font (lh-cmu ↔ Source Sans 3).
- Empty reading-font-size and heading-weight commits wrote the clamp
minimum (Number("") is 0 → 12 / 100) instead of unsetting. Empty now
omits the key — absence is the delta schema's unset for numbers — so the
field stays empty, the record unsets, and the hint carries the resolved
default (16px / 900). Typed values still clamp visibly (-5 → 12).

Fix wave: dropdown keyboard/focus, appearance resets, inline key editors, content-sized slider
- MenuShell: after placement, focus lands in the search when the menu has one, else the body (tabIndex -1) — the lists' mount-time focus ran during the hidden measuring pass and silently failed, so no dropdown ever opened focused. The body owns the arrow machine for searchless menus: ArrowDown/Up cycle options with wrap (first/last entry from the body, native-select convention), Home/End, Enter activates, preventDefault so arrows never scroll the page. - Appearance: the CSS-var applier only ever setProperty'd — a later write omitting a var left the stale inline value forever (empty background never reset, serif toggle-back looked dead). appliedNamesRef tracks what was set; staleVarNames (pure, exported) returns what to removeProperty. - CommitInput: controlled — after a commit the field snaps to the stored record, so the clamp on a -5 prose size is visible (12), Esc reverts. - Keys: Add-provider dropdown closes on pick; the paste row is inline (label | input | Save | Cancel); existing-row editors go inline with an explicit Cancel beside Save/Delete — folding is visible, not Esc-only. - Graph context: readout is content-sized (tabular-nums) — no fixed-width dead gap when "off"; the dictation strip fills whatever space remains. Gates: tsc clean, 866/866 tests (new staleVarNames suite), lint 0, build ok. Live-verified via Playwright: dropdown focus+arrow cycles+wrap+Enter pick, background set→empty reset, serif round-trip, visible clamp to 12, provider pick closes menu, inline editor + Cancel + Esc fold, slider width 270→277px. |

feat(keys): LH_IGNORE_ENV_KEYS — the fresh-user switch + dev-fresh launcher
The owner needs exact new-user simulation as a one-command launch (repeatable first-run BYOK testing). Option A, owner-approved: env-hiding switch + launcher script. Fix 1 — LH_IGNORE_ENV_KEYS=1 in the keys seam: when set, every env key is invisible app-wide; only auth.json counts. The mechanism is boot-time DELETION, not seam-local filtering: pi-ai resolves provider keys from process.env NATIVELY at every request (verified — auth/context.js's defaultProviderAuthContext reads live env, no boot snapshot), so deleting the managed vars from process.env in initAuthEnv is the ONE mechanism that hides keys from every consumer — model engines included, plus the three direct process.env readers (visual-maker, pdf-reader, openRouterApiKey). realEnv stays EMPTY under the switch (nothing counts as env), and the fill-gap still reflects auth.json keys so a fresh user can add keys mid-session and engines see them with no restart. keyValue reads file-only under the switch as belt-and-suspenders (a post-boot env reintroduction stays invisible to the seam). Unset switch = today's behavior, byte-for-byte (server-keys.test.ts pins it). Fix 2 — scripts/dev-fresh.sh (npm run dev:fresh): fresh throwaway LH_DATA_DIR (.fresh-data/, wiped each launch, --keep preserves), and — the subtle bit — LH_AUTH_FILE redirected INTO the fresh dir: dev's AUTH_FILE default is the repo-root auth.json, which may symlink the real keys; the fresh instance must never see it. Sets the switch, dedicated port (default 3005, --port overrideable, standing assignments 3000-3004 refused), prints URL + data dir, safe to rerun. .fresh-data/ gitignored. Test: tests/fresh-env-keys.test.ts (own process — the switch is boot-time): the engine-path deletion asserted directly, the env/file collision resolved to the file, status rows report file sources only, mid-session saveKey/deleteKey round-trip, idempotent re-init, and the unset-switch env-wins read seam live-checked. Live-verified on 3005 via the launcher: zero federated models, all providers keyPresent false, no present keys, no auth.json/settings.json in the fresh dir; then mid-session ZAI save → 7 zai models federate instantly, source 'file' — while .env.local's real keys stayed invisible throughout. Gates: typecheck, lint, 863/863, build. |

Fix wave: scroll-lock without layout shift; every models write mirrors the stored record
Fix 1 (owner: "lock must not shift"): the settings dialog's scroll-lock no longer toggles the content column to overflow-hidden (which hid the scrollbar and shifted everything right). The column KEEPS overflow-y-auto — scrollbar and widths stay exactly as they are — and while any MenuShell is open, non-passive wheel + touchmove listeners on the column preventDefault so it cannot scroll (owner-ruled mechanism: the scrollbar may stay, scrolling must not happen, nothing may move). Native listeners via ref — React attaches synthetic wheel/touch passively at the root. Fix 2 (owner repro: xhigh pin survives a GLM swap on screen until reload): every models-writing surface now mirrors SERVER TRUTH, never the request body. The PUT already returns the full stored record with clamps applied — settings-dialog write() and the composer's save() now setRecord/setModels from the response, so a swap that rides an unsupported level shows the clamped value in the same interaction: the row trigger, the open menu's level list + checkmark, and the composer pill all read the stored record. Live-verified the owner's exact repro: deepseek pinned extra high → GLM swap via the slot menu → trigger/menu/pill showed the stored clamped level immediately; and the lock cycle: scroll 300 → blocked while open → 300 after release, zero positional shift at engage. |

Fix wave chunk 2: thinking levels auto-populate everywhere; legacy records show the resolved level
- thinking-default.ts: defaultOrderLevel (the ordering's first supported, the client twin of the server's defaultThinkingLevel) + populateLevel (an explicit level always rides; the WRITE clamps server-side, bd68486, and the cross-surface signal re-reads the clamped truth; only absence populates from the ordering) + THINKING_LABEL shared. - Setup dialog (item 5): per-slot thinking selectors pre-populated with the default-order level per picked model, editable; disabled until the model pick; prefillLevelFromPin keeps a stored level as-is and populates legacy pins from the ordering. - Composer + agent section (item 6): fresh model picks always write a level: the stored one rides, absence populates; the unset state can never re-enter. Item 4: records with a model but no stored level display the RESOLVED level (ordering's first supported) instead of a dash, in the composer pill and the settings slot triggers/menus. - Item 7 verified live end-to-end: an explicit level rides into the PUT, the server clamps, the signal re-reads, the pill shows the clamped truth. |

Fix wave chunk 1: cross-surface settings signal, dialog scroll-lock, noneRow retired
- lh:settings-saved CustomEvent (the lh:chat-renamed pattern, owner ruling): every writer (composer save, SetupDialog save, the settings write seam — one dispatch point carrying the section) notifies after a successful PUT; every reader re-reads its own seam: ModelControl's record read, the Agent section's slots/catalog, and chat.tsx's configured state (clearing slots mid-session now surfaces the setup CTA without a reload). Self-notifications re-read idempotently. - MenuShell now announces lh:menu-open/lh:menu-close (still placement- only); the settings dialog's content column locks (overflow-hidden, count-based) while any menu is open — wheel-scrolling with a dropdown down is dead; the re-place-on-scroll fallback stays for un-lockable surfaces. - The settings thinking menus' 'Default' noneRow is retired (owner: the unset state can't re-enter once chunk 2's auto-populate lands; no unpin is needed). - Live-caught regression from the MenuShell migration fixed: the composer's outside-click handler never learned the portaled menu body isn't a container descendant — menu-row pointerdowns counted as outside and ATE THE PICK (composer picks have been dead for pointer users since 221c99d); rows now carve out via [data-lh-menu], the settings sections' discipline. - Item 4 (resolved-level display for legacy records) deferred to chunk 2 per owner ruling — the payload omits the level for legacy no-level records and DEFAULT_THINKING_ORDER was server-only (now in the core barrel via bd68486, exactly the seam chunk 2 needs). |

feat(models): clamp-on-write for pinned thinking levels + DEFAULT_THINKING_ORDER in the core barrel
Fix 1 — clamp, never reject (owner ruling, interlude 2026-09-22): a model swap with a pinned thinking level must JUST WORK. The owner hit the write-side 400 live (Claude Fable 5.1/xhigh → GLM 5.3 flash: "z-ai/glm-5.3-flash does not support thinking level xhigh"). The supported-level verdicts in validateChatSettings and validateModelsSettings are DEAD — the WRITE clamps the pin to the new model's nearest supported level (pi's clampThinkingLevel, the same translation piEngineForSpec applies at runtime) and stores the clamped result; the server is the truth — the record shows the clamped level after write. New pure helpers in model-catalog.ts, applied by ALL THREE write routes (section, defaults, per-chat — one verdict seam, so every surface that used the old 400 gets the clamp uniformly): - clampModelsLevels: every slot's level clamps against the SLOT'S OWN model (the parser already requires a model on each slot write). - clampChatLevel: the body's own model, else the record's resolved strong slot (the chain's fallback); no model anywhere → rides unchecked (runtime clamps at engine build; the turn gate refuses the model-less chat anyway). Fix 2 — DEFAULT_THINKING_ORDER moves from config.ts to core/settings (core barrel, AUTH_KEYS precedent — one source of truth, no drift). The UI imports it to auto-populate a thinking level on FRESH model picks; the ordering has no other client role. Legacy unset records keep the runtime defaultThinkingLevel fallback at engine build untouched. Import sites updated: agent/models.ts, tests. Verified live on 3004: the owner's exact case stores max (not 400); a bare chat-level write clamps to low against the strong slot's glm; unknown provider/model still 400s with the provider list. Tests: the level-verdict suites became clamp suites (the owner's case pinned verbatim: xhigh→max, minimal→low, off→low, supported pass-through, level-less slots ride); the machine-aware expectBareLevelVerdict chain is retired — clampChatLevel takes the strong slot as an explicit param, so the tests are pure again. Gates: typecheck, lint, 839/839, build. |

BYOK universal gate rendered honestly: mid-chat setup flow, refusal-aware cards
- existing sessions: a send that lands the 503 models_not_configured envelope renders as the SETUP FLOW, never the error banner — the record refetch drops the refused orphan (the gate refuses before the write-ahead persist), the draft goes home to the composer, and Save auto-replays it (owner ruling); parseModelsRefusal reads the envelope from the transport's verbatim error text (exported pure, tested) - persistent 'Set up your models' CTA above the chat composer while slotsConfigured is false (server-read seed via app/chat/[id]/page.tsx) — legacy per-chat overrides may still send with the pill present; the server gate stays the truth - SetupDialog prefill + 'needed' marks (owner ruling): pinned tiers open with their pick (matched in the federated catalog — lapsed keys don't prefill), unpinned tiers carry the mark; Save still requires all three; prefillFromSlots exported pure, tested - refused jobs read as INFO: dispatch card shows a quiet 'needs model setup' line + 'Set up models' deep-link (ChatActionsContext.openSetup); dock blobs' activity reads 'needs model setup' instead of 'failed'; real failures keep the red tone; isModelsRefusal added to the envelope's home module - agent-section ModelsBody.slots type honest to the nullable contract |

The fix wave (4e1f545) put research + pdf in the prober's registry per the owner ruling, but the doctrine never mentioned them. Owner chose (2026-09-22) a brief grounded mention over schema-only discovery: the paragraph extending 'read his actual material' now covers pdf (same grounding for his PDF material, no copy-pasting) and research (sparingly, only when pinning a fact would genuinely sharpen a probe question — probing is measurement, not exploration, and a research brief is never a reason to stall the questions). |

fix(runner): the BYOK refusal steers — a dispatched job is never stranded
The BYOK refusal path (engineFor came up empty) only flipped the job record to error and returned: no steer. But the teacher had already dispatched — the ack promised a result as a new message — so the lesson stalled at the dock card with the turn over and the teacher waiting forever on a brief that would never arrive. Every other failed job steers (the research/demo/visual/pdf catch paths all deliver the kind's failure shape through finishJob); the refusal now follows the SAME convention: - record the honest error (envelope wording + missing tier) WITHOUT flipping status — finalizeJob owns the terminal flip after delivery; - build the kind's failure result (Research failed:/FAILED:/PDF failed: shapes the isSubagentFailure heuristics read) and steer it through finishJob, so the wake pipeline resumes the lesson and the teacher reads the refusal and tells the learner. Also cleaned the stale engineFor doc (the model-slots-era block still said 'factory-pin chain ... absent → config pins' — two comments had accumulated on the field; merged into one BYOK-accurate block). Platform's refusal test pinned the old no-steer semantics; updated to assert the new convention (steer delivered, record flipped by finalizeJob after). The other piEngineFor callers (teacher-agent, pi-run, visual-maker, pdf-reader) are deliberate honest-thrower fallbacks (opts.engine ?? piEngineFor(role)) — missed-injection detectors, kept as-is. |

test(model-catalog): machine-aware record assertions — the suite runs green on any tree
Master reported the only red on main: 'serves the keyed providers' catalogs' pinned defaults/slots NULL, but catalogDefaults/catalogSlots read the REAL data/settings.json — the owner's tree carries configured slots, so the payload is legitimately non-null there while the platform worktree's scratch record is empty. Same class of fragility in two more tests the scratch run couldn't see: the bare-level validation verdicts (validateChatSettings / validateModelsSettings) fall back to the record's resolved strong tier. data/settings.json belongs to settings-store.test.ts under the one-fs-owner discipline, so the tests READ the resolved truth instead of pinning it — the chat-flow 503-gate pattern, applied to all four: - modelCatalog payload: defaults/slots must carry EXACTLY what the machine's record says (configured slots surface as configured, empty record surfaces as null) — never a phantom id in either direction. - catalogSlots: projects each stored tier's model verbatim; a tier without a model reads null. - bare-level verdicts: expectBareLevelVerdict mirrors the fallback chain — no resolved tier → rides unchecked; a tier whose model left the catalog → rejected honestly; else the supported-level check. Verified green against four record states: empty, configured (glm with unsupported minimal), vanished model, and a level-only stored slot (inert). Gates: typecheck, lint, 825/825, build. |

feat(models): BYOK all the way down — factory pins deleted, per-need refusal gates
Owner decision 2026-09-22: 'it doesn't make sense to have any default
model configured anywhere; the application is bring your own keys.'
config.ts: MODELS deleted; ModelRole becomes an explicit 9-role union;
DEFAULT_THINKING_ORDER (medium, low, high, minimal, xhigh, max) bakes
the unset-level default — first entry the model supports; explicitly
set levels keep pi's native nearest-clamp.
core/settings-resolution: the factory layer dissolves — the chain is
role override → slot → NOTHING. resolveSettings(record) takes no
factory. Empty chains resolve to null/undefined; a thinkingLevel-only
slot is inert (stored, never run). resolveConversationSpec: chat.model
override over the strong slot, null when both empty. resolveRoleSpec
spans all nine roles for the job/extraction engines.
Refusal envelope (core/settings.ts): modelsNotConfigured(missing) —
{error, code: 'models_not_configured', missing: [slot tiers]} +
ModelsNotConfiguredError with .envelope. Per-need gates, each honest:
- chat-handler: universal turn gate (new + continuing turns) returns
503 before beginTurn — no liveness, no write-ahead persist, no graph
trigger before the gate fires.
- runner.runJob: unresolvable engine lands the job as error with the
envelope wording; no phantom loop, no result steer.
- extraction: refuseIfStagesUnconfigured throws before any stage
(turn-service info-skips so coverage retries next turn; the import
route surfaces per-file code+missing); labeler-less runs skip
cluster naming with a console line and still merge.
Write side: slot entries must carry a model — level-only slot writes
are 400s (absent slot key = clear). piEngineForSpec resolves unset
thinking levels via DEFAULT_THINKING_ORDER; piEngineFor now throws
honestly; thinkingLevelFor/modelIdFor deleted; teacher-agent, pi-run,
visual-maker, pdf-reader all read engine.level.
model-catalog: defaults/slots/rolePins null when the chain is empty
(contracts nullable) — no phantom ids in payloads. Stores drop
MODEL_PINS entirely.
Tests: pin-leaners converted to explicit injection (per-chat model
pins on scripted chats — exactly what the setup flow writes; faux
engines for agent-construction tests). New coverage: the 503 gate
envelope, the runner refusal, the extraction refusal + labeler skip.
Gates: typecheck, lint, 815/815, build.

Fix wave chunk B: shared MenuShell for model menus, setup CTA on /chat/new
- components/menu-shell.tsx: one portaled, fixed-anchored, viewport-capped (60vh pattern) menu shell with site-preferred side + honest-fit auto-flip; computeMenuPlacement exported pure, placement-only (sites keep their own open/close/Esc contracts); re-places on capture-phase scroll/resize - migrated: settings slot menus (agent-section), keys Add-provider, composer model+thinking (open up, right-aligned), SetupDialog pickers (portaled out of the overflow-hidden dialog frame — no clipping by construction); graph popovers + stats-bar summary stay bespoke (owner) - /chat/new: the setup CTA above the draft blob, mirroring home's - tests: menu-shell-pure (geometry/cap/flip/alignment), DraftShell CTA |

Fix wave chunk A: no Default option, composer = strong slot, catalog revalidation
Item 1 — no Default in the slot selectors (owner, fix wave): a "default" model is not a thing in this app. Picking Default used to delete the slot and re-arm the first-run gate — incoherent. Now the model menus carry NO clear row at all (a slot holds a pick or reads "—"), the thinking menus carry a "—" row (menu-none) that clears only the thinking pin, and the hint line is the roster only — the resolved factory pin is never named. Master's amendment confirmed: the factory-pin hint is SUPERSEDED entirely (Platform removes the pins). Item 2 — the composer control IS the strong slot (owner: "one and the same"): ModelControl (model-picker.tsx) reads the raw models section (GET /api/settings) and the federated catalog, and writes PUT /api/settings/models via composeSlotModel — the same seam the settings Agent section and SetupDialog use. Props retired: chatId, settings, onSaved, fallbackModelId, noDefaultModel — the control is self-sufficient and identical on every surface (composer, home dock, /chat/new). The per-chat model PUT is gone from the UI; legacy per-chat overrides keep resolving server-side. StatsBar/DockOverlay plumbing slimmed accordingly; chat.tsx drops its per-chat settings state and initialSettings prop. Item 3 — the composer catalog cache no longer freezes per page load: fetchCatalog(force) invalidates, and every model-menu open revalidates in the background (stale-while-revalidate — cached list shows instantly, the fresh federation swaps in). Owner's repro verified live: a key saved mid-session widens the menu without a reload. Item 4 — stale doc comments fixed: model-catalog.ts's "OpenRouter catalog"/"multi-provider future" (Platform's file — mechanical, flagged for review) and model-picker's retired "config-pinned"/ per-chat-PUT narrative. Live-verified on 3001: unpicked slots read "—" everywhere; model menus have no clear row; the "—" thinking row clears the pin but keeps the model; composer pick writes strong and preserves cheap/ vision siblings; thinking pill writes strong.thinkingLevel; groq key added mid-session appears in the open menu without reload. Caught in live verification: the record fetch was mapping the WHOLE settings record into the models section (picks never wrote) — fixed to read body.settings.models. Gates: typecheck, lint, 807/807, build. |

fix(tools): wire the searchAvailable gate + research/pdf in the probe phase
Fix wave (2026-09-20), two owner-approved fixes: Fix 1 — the searchAvailable gate was dead code on the live wiring path: createTeacherTools RECEIVED ctx.searchAvailable but dropped it when building the inner JobToolContext, so jobTools' research gate always took its ?? true default (jobTools-direct tests passed; the production path never saw the signal). Threaded through — the gate now reads the live server signal on the teacher registry too. Fix 2 — the prober registry gains the research + pdf dispatch tools (owner ruling, 2026-09-20): these two are phase-omnipresent — the prober can verify facts or read learner PDFs while assessing. demo/visual stay teach-phase-only (they need the lesson's plan context). Same gating as the teacher side: toggle-filtered, research subject to the search gate (honestly absent when no engine is live — the prober's dispatch closes over the SAME jobTools builder, one gate, one semantics). probe_done stays always-on-by-construction; the learner-fs set untouched. - ProberToolContext (extends ProbeDoneContext with the job wiring); createProberAgent takes it; chat-handler injects jobStore + spawn + searchAvailable into the prober ctx. - TeacherToolContext.spawn's stale input union fixed (PdfInput was missing from the TYPE — runtime already passed it). - Tests: the threaded-gate describe in web-search.test.ts pins the LIVE factory path both ways (teacher + prober); question-tools' registry key-sets gain research/pdf; the prober toggle test pins the research:false path. Gates: typecheck, 807/807 tests, lint, build — all green. |

Research tool row grays on the registry's own search signal (Teacher flag)
The teacher registry drops the research tool when no search engine is
live (chat-handler's searchAvailable, 2026-09-20) — the settings row
now grays on the SAME /api/search signal, so the row and the actual
registry availability can never disagree (Teacher-stream flag,
2026-09-22, routed by master).
- researchToolUnavailable (pure): research grays exactly when the live
status says unavailable; a loading/failed fetch grays nothing; the
other tools never touch the search port.
- The row: whole-row dim (graph-view graying) + disabled toggle + the
status reason as the hint — the same line the search-engine row
under it speaks from.
Two live-caught fixes while here:
- The reason line refreshed IN the pick handler raced the section PUT
(the hint could contradict the trigger it sits under — caught with a
Brave pin: trigger 'Brave', hint still 'tavily (auto)'). The refresh
now keys on the agent prop's engine pin, so it reads post-write
state.
- The engine menu options render from a map without React keys
(console warning) — keyed.
Live-verified on 3001: no engine key → research dimmed with reason,
siblings untouched; Tavily key saved + section reopened → row alive
('search engine: tavily (auto)'); Brave pinned without its key → both
rows gray with the honest missing-key reason; Automatic restored.
Gates: typecheck, lint, 803/803, build.

feat(extraction): stage engines resolve the slot chain — engineFor on the pipeline
Chunk B, item 3 of the search port + slots wave (2026-09-20): the flagged gap closed — ExtractionModels deps were engine VALUES, keeping extractor/auditor/labeler config-pin-bound while the job runner went slot-native. The pipeline now takes the runner's exact treatment: - ExtractionPipelineDeps.engineFor: (role) => PiEngine — resolved FRESH per stage call, so a settings PUT between stages lands. Direct test values (extractor/auditor/labeler) remain the priority seam, checked FIRST; absent values fall to the chain; absent chain → config pins (unchanged). - All six stage call sites (chat + notes extract/audit, the cluster namer x2) resolve through stageEngine(role, direct). - chat-handler's extraction composition injects the full chain — piEngineForSpec(resolveRoleSpec(role, readSettings(), MODEL_PINS)) — same wiring as the job runner. Chunk B, item 4 (session-level slot-anchored model picks): VERIFIED already complete from Platform's model-slots wave — the conversation engine chain (chat-handler) anchors on effective.models.strong, the picker's default surface (catalogDefaultsFor) falls back to strong, both pinned in tests. No phase split (user decision, 2026-09-20). Capability-filtered pickers live in the settings UI (main 343be10). Tests: engineFor fills the stages end-to-end (both propositions merged through the chain, consulted in pipeline order) + the direct-value priority pin (engineFor that throws when consulted). Gates: typecheck, 795/795 tests, lint, build — all green. |

feat(search): web_search onto the injected port — Google CSE retired, research honestly disabled
Chunk A of the search port wave (2026-09-20), per master's assignment: - web.ts: the Google Custom Search backend is gone — web_search now runs on the core search port (SearchProvider), injected as a dependency (import law: the tool never imports server code). createWebTools(search) resolves the LIVE provider fresh per call; null = the honest unavailability string (no silent fallback, owner decision). web_fetch unchanged (needs no engine). - runner: JobRunnerDeps.searchProvider — the server composition threaded into the researcher; jobs already in flight when a key disappears still fail honestly through the same seam, never crash. - jobTools: the research dispatch tool DROPS from the teacher's registry when ctx.searchAvailable() is false (owner decision: registry-level drop — the model never sees the tool, no doomed dispatch, no error card). Absent seam = available (tests). chat-handler injects server/searchAvailable + searchProvider. - tests: stubFetch (the Google wire stub) retired; jobs.test.ts threads a recording stub provider through all four research runners and asserts the scripted query hit the port; new web-search.test.ts covers the factory contract (null → honest string, hits, error strings, fresh resolution, web_fetch independence) + the registry drop matrix. Gates: typecheck, 793/793 tests, lint, build — all green. |

Wave-5 chunk B: three model slots, search-engine row, first-run setup flow
Chunk B (owner-designed, model-slots wave) on the merged engine surface (main 1d66a17): AGENT SECTION — SLOTS ONLY (owner ruling) - The six per-role model rows are GONE; three slot rows instead: Strong (Prober + Teacher), Cheap (five workhorse roles), Vision (visual maker + PDF reader), roster + resolved-default in every hint. - Slot dropdowns share the app's menu language over the FEDERATED catalog (/api/models = keyed providers only, fresh per call — saving a key in Keys immediately widens the picker); the vision slot filters to image-capable models (Model.input); the menu's highlight now matches provider+id (ids can collide across providers). - Slots write the new models section (PUT /api/settings/models) through the dialog's write seam; per-role overrides stay schema-only. - ModelMenuList rows read 'provider · id' — federation makes the provider bookkeeping-relevant. Usage stamps render provider-qualified (prettyModel(qualified): 'Glm 5.3 Flash · openrouter') in the stats bar's turn lines. SEARCH ENGINE (search wave: no default, owner) - A row in Tools: Tavily/Brave via the shared-menu look, Automatic = the pin removed (auto-activation). The live reason line comes from /api/search; no engine key at all grays the whole row + disables the trigger (a keyless choice would only block auto-activation). FIRST-RUN SETUP FLOW (owner design A: composer CTA + send interception) - Chats cannot start until all three slots are picked — no defaults for 33 providers (slotsConfigured: all three slot models required). - The graph view's new-session dock (home) shows a 'Set up your models' CTA while unconfigured; submitting a topic opens the SetupDialog WITH THE DRAFT PRESERVED; Save stores the models section and the queued message sends. Same interception on /chat/new sends. - STAGED BY DEPENDENCY (owner: keys first, models after): no keyed provider → stage 1 deep-links the settings dialog on Keys (open now takes a section); a saved key reopens at stage 2 on the next submit. - Stage 2: Strong → Cheap → Vision pickers (federated, vision-filtered, all three required). Closable without configuring — browsing stays possible; the gate is the send, not the dialog. Layered Esc: an open slot menu eats Esc before the dialog. - Two closure bugs caught live: onDone→start/send captured the stale pre-save 'configured' (the flow now forces the replayed send); menu-Esc used to close the whole dialog. Settings-dialog provider: open(section?) lands on a section (stage 1 deep-link). Tests: composeSlotModel/composeSearchEngine pure, slot SSR replacing role rows, slotsConfigured/setupStage first-run gates, provider-qualified prettyModel. Gates: typecheck, lint, 792/792, build. |
