Linux host on Codex-ytr83r — 2026-09-11
Paused by direct user instruction at 15:28 UTC. The user will resolve WSL 2 networking and explicitly instruct when Linux work should resume. Do not resume setup, downloads, builds or checking before that signal. Windows development and native verification continue. Coordination.
Networking is still unresolved. Offline dependency preparation was a workaround, not a networking fix. The host VPN is immutable and has not been inspected or modified.
Actual current state
Official Ubuntu 26.04 registration completed with exit 0 at 14:19:47.907 UTC after the user enabled virtualization and rebooted. A real x86_64 WSL 2 kernel shell ran: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, kernel 6.18.33.2-microsoft-standard-WSL2, ext4 root filesystem. Later short-lived startups timed out before guest execution; these are distinct from the earlier pre-virtualization HCS_E_HYPERV_NOT_INSTALLED registration failure.
The owner's comment 316 mirrored-networking trial timed out before a prompt. Following comment 328, root preserved the prior configuration and set exactly:
[wsl2]
networkingMode=virtioproxy
Ordinary WSL shutdown completed at 14:51:36.965 UTC. One persistent root shell emitted readiness at 14:53:48 UTC and reported VirtioProxy mode. Requested checks failed: no default route, ping exit 2 (network unreachable), bounded GitHub DNS lookup exit 124, HTTPS exit 28 while resolving. /etc/resolv.conf points to an absent /mnt/wsl/resolv.conf. Later systemd reported running with no failed units. These observations do not establish the cause. No resolver, route, firewall, VPN or registry correction was made. Raw interface-address logs remain local.
Preserved preparation, not Linux acceptance
Working Windows HTTPS supplied five official Rust 1.98.1 components with publisher-manifest SHA256 verification. All 460 locked crate archives and matching sparse metadata were verified and bundled without Windows compiled objects, private Cargo configuration or credentials.
The guest's installed Ubuntu archive key accepted all three preserved InRelease signatures. Six main/universe indexes matched those signed release hashes. An isolated task-only APT file mirror imported six trusted indexes; update and exact URI planning both exited 0. The generic update timeout is consistent with an existing PackageKit D-Bus notification hook; this is an inference, and the hook was not changed. The plan selects 61 new packages and 15 updates, zero removals, approximately 121 MB of archives and 316 MB additional installed space. No APT package installation or Linux Cargo was started.
On the user's pause, root interrupted the task-prefix Rust command with Ctrl+C and observed the same shell return to its idle prompt. No completed Rust installation is claimed. The download worker is freezing its complete/partial subset and cleanup evidence in harness/release-linux-offline-preparation-ytr83r-20260911.md. Do not equate prepared archives with an installed toolchain or a runnable Linux application.
Durable records and resumption boundary
Current published implementation is 29084050a7c020e0fb488be37c6e1ab235769cc0 on codex/release1-ytr83r. Root owns live compiler/native acceptance; Windows lifecycle tests passed 22/22 and full desktop regression is proceeding separately.
Read harness/STATE.md, harness/TASK_LEDGER.md, harness/release-wsl-postboot-ytr83r-20260911.md and the offline report before any user-authorized Linux resumption. Preserve complete and partial inputs and confirm actual state before retrying interrupted task-prefix setup. Linux build, actual GUI, three-binary package, REST workflow and compatibility acceptance remain unverified. Ubuntu 26.04 evidence would not establish the older Ubuntu 24.04 baseline automatically.
The earlier QEMU host route is historical. Its exact former Wiki bytes are archived at harness/history/2026-09-11-ytr83r-integration/wiki-linux-host-before-wsl-20260911.md (SHA256 E131F82A65CED4C294CE100EA574D332C7BF36D8064CE78875C58C375AF1D4D0). Initial installer, post-virtualization and mirrored evidence remain under harness/experiments/wsl-postboot-ytr83r-20260911/. The reviewed optional startup trace was never run and is not a current task or an administrator request.
